Organic beetroot was first grown for consumption in Germany or Italy in the 16th century while the leaves of the plant have been consumed since pre-historic times. Beetroot vegetable for the longest time was regarded as medicine and the leaves for consumption use. The plant was also used as an ornamental plant in the Hanging Gardens of Babylon in 800 B.C. The ancient Greeks used the beet leaves to close wounds. Back in the 19th century, women also used to use beetroot juice for dyeing hair along with the Victorians who used it in the 16th century.
